No TARIC update was published by the European Union today, marking a quiet day for new regulatory publications. However, the customs landscape saw significant movement as 565 previously loaded measures came into force. The activity was concentrated in the agricultural sector, fulfilling the pattern of scheduled tariff adjustments noted last week. Today's changes are led by the activation of numerous new tariff quotas for various breeds of live bovine animals imported from all non-EU countries.

Measures taking effect

While no new measures were loaded into TARIC today, the day was marked by the activation of 565 previously scheduled measures. The overwhelming focus of these changes is on the agricultural sector, particularly live animals under Chapter 01 of the tariff schedule.

Notably, a wide range of new tariff quotas for live bovine animals now apply to imports from all non-EU countries. These cover various breeds intended for fattening or slaughter, including Simmental, Schwyz, and Fribourg. The in-quota duties vary, with some set as simple ad valorem rates (e.g., 4.000% or 6.000%) and others as more complex compound duties, such as 16.000% plus a specific charge of 582 EUR per tonne.

What to watch

Today’s activation of agricultural quotas follows a similar large-scale adjustment for fruit tariffs last week, reinforcing the pattern of significant, pre-planned seasonal changes to the EU’s trade regime. The focus for trade professionals now remains on the implementation of these new agricultural rates and any further signals of new trade defence activity, such as the scrutiny on Chinese glass microspheres initiated last week.
